Visions & Values
~ Worship Series for Epiphany 2024 ~
We begin the new year with the new vision statement of our CA-NV Annual Conference: “Following Jesus, Thriving in Community, Healing the World.”
Our hope is that, guided by this vision, a visible movement of healing will arise from within our conference and that our future testimonies will declare that God is still at work in and through us, and that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.”
Indeed, with God, all things are possible.

Generous — the Beauty in Giving
~ Stewardship Worship Series ~
We get lots of messages about what is important, what the “good life” is, and everything we need to do and have to achieve it. Still, so many of us remain unsatisfied, chasing after the next thing in search of fulfillment. But there is good news for us!
God desires for us to have lives of contentment, freedom from worry, and joy in abundance. And Jesus shows us the way there. As we learn how to find our contentment in God, we will also discover the beauty in giving. Our lives will be evidence that the good life is the generous life – a life through which the grace of God flows into the world.

Come to the Table
~ Worship Series for Sept 3rd-October 1st, 2023 ~
In this Worship series, we hear the call to dine with Jesus — an invitation that means much more than a simple eating experience. For Jesus, the table was a place where he fed people and also challenged them to acts of hospitality that reflect God’s way. Underdogs
~ Worship Series for Summer 2023 ~
If you ever feel like the forces are against you or you lack the confidence to pursue your dreams, you are not alone. The Bible is full of ordinary people whom the world viewed as underdogs.
Yet, God chose them to do something extraordinary and amazing. This summer, we will explore eight biblical characters who were considered underdogs and their excuses, based on

No matter how big or small we fall, God’s hands are always ready to raise us up.

Questions

~ Worship Series for Lent ~
Asking questions is a normal part of human life. Having doubts is part of the human experience.
We do not have to be ashamed of our doubts or hide our questions before God.
In fact, God fully welcomes them and welcomes us. This Lent, we will practice bringing some of our biggest questions and doubts to God. We will practice embracing this deeply human part of ourselves as we move together toward the great and joyous mystery of Easter resurrection.

Reflecting the Sacred

~ Worship Series for Advent & Christmas ~
The Christmas season is a time when the juxtaposition of the sacred and secular feels sometimes blatantly opposed, and sometimes quite blurred. The word “sacred” points to something dedicated as “holy” and “set apart.” This year, you are invited to a spiritual journey of seeing ALL things pregnant with the Holy. What could our experience of Advent & Christmas season be like if we lived it imagining everything is reflecting the sacred?

Releasing God’s Blessings

~ Stewardship Worship Series ~
We often think of blessings as things we receive. While it is true that God, by grace, freely gives us all that we have, we are not just passive recipients of God’s blessings! Just as God blesses us through the people in our lives, so does God promise to bless others through us. When we live from a place of gratitude for God’s gifts and trust in God’s provision, we can be agents of God’s blessings in our world.

Paradigm Shift

~ Worship Series ~
First introduced by American physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn in 1965 and widespread beyond the field of science, a paradigm shift is defined as “an important change that happens when the usual way of thinking about or doing something is replaced by a new and different way. Let’s Celebrate

~ Worship Series ~
The heart of worship is celebration. In our gathering, we celebrate who God is, what God has done for us in Jesus, and what God continues to do for us through the work of the Holy Spirit. By taking the time to celebrate God’s gifts to us, we are attuning ourselves to the good and wonderful things in life so that, even in times of struggle and hardship, we can be sustained. Throughout this worship series, we will celebrate God’s gifts of friendship, diversity, unity, pride, love, & work.

Good Enough: Embracing the Imperfections of Life & Faith

~ Worship Series for Lent & Easter 2022~
We live in a culture bent on definitions of a good life as continuous upward mobility– climbing ladders of prosperity with increasingly fabulous experiences that we can post to ever more-likable social media accounts. We may comb the shelves of the self-help section in search of just the right formula to gain success. Perhaps we even gravitate towards spiritual leaders who promise great rewards if we only do “the right thing.”
But life happens, right?
Most times we are not moving upward but trying to repair the rung we’ve just slipped from. So what if we stopped climbing and started fertilizing, watering, and blooming right where we find ourselves?
Welcome to a Lent of affirming a faith in which we are blessed, regardless, and where we can lean into embracing our “good enough” lives.
This worship series was created by Worship Design Studio, inspired by Kate Bowler’s newly published devotional book, Good Enough. (Get the accompanying Good Enough Lent: Daily Reflection Guide here.)

The Inn – Housing the Holy

~ Advent Worship Series 2021~
The pandemic has laid bare, and widened, economic disparity locally and globally. As we enter the Advent season, how can our churches become houses where the Holy will be born anew–offering respite, sustenance and care, opening the doors ever wider to those seeking shelter from the onslaught of life?
No one church can do it all, but each can do something.
As we study the biblical prophets that call us to care for our neighbors and “make room in the inn,” the lonely and frightened spaces within us are filled with the light of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love.

All In!

~ Stewardship Worship Series for November ~
When we face important decisions and opportunities in our lives, we may weigh the pros and cons. We often find reasons to avoid making changes and to keep doing things the same old way.
But there comes a time when we must decide… are we going to play it safe or go all in?
John 3:16 tells us that God loved us so much that he gave his only Son for us, “so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” God’s love for us is “all in!” In turn, when we put all our trust in God, our lives can be freed for unimaginable wonder. This worship series will explore what it means to be “all in” for God – with all of our being and all that we have.

Living Faith

~ Worship Series for September ~
John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, insisted that Christian faith was more than just a set of beliefs or a feeling. Faith changes our lives and results in faithful action in the world. The New Testament letter of James gives the same message. Following the epistle readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, this series will look at John Wesley’s General Rules in connection with readings from James to show how our faith can come to life in all that we say and do.

QUEST – Travel as a Spiritual Act

~ Worship Series for Summer ~
We will embark on a journey for four weeks. It is a journey about journeying, about traveling as a spiritual act. Whether we travel far away or simply begin to see our local surroundings as if for the first time, “pilgrimage” has long been a spiritual practice, and “journey” a deeply-felt metaphor for our spiritual lives. “Quest” comes from the Latin root meaning “ask” and “seek.” This worship series will encourage us to open ourselves more fully to the curiosity and wonder, reflection, and transformation that travelers –not merely tourists– experience when we choose to immerse ourselves in soul-widening adventures,

Dare to Dance Again

~ An Eastertide Series thru Pentecost~
As Easter people, we are called to dance our dances of freedom for all the world to see–even and perhaps especially in times of great difficulty. Dances of hope. Dances of justice. Dances of love. During this season, post-resurrection stories point to the joy of living in the beloved community and extending that fellowship through our witness as we dare to dance again!
On a morning when all seemed lost, a stone had rolled away to uncover the feast of all feasts, the joy of all joys. The shroud of death had become a veil for gladness, for celebration, for dancing. What if we stopped trying to outrun one another in a race for things that do not matter in the end, and instead ran toward life and hope and all the joy we can accomplish together, daring to dance again?

Holy Vessels

~ A Lenten Season of Recovery ~
February 17 – March 28, 2021
Each of us is created a precious and holy vessel of embodied love. We have been through a harrowing time since last Lent that has shattered our sense of wholeness – body, mind, and spirit – like a glass vessel fractured into pieces.
In this Lenten “season of recovery” for our physical, communal, mental, intellectual, and environmental health, we will explore the healing narratives of Jesus that tell of divine solidarity with human suffering and remind us that we can begin a journey toward making something beautiful from that which is seemingly broken.
Beach glass offers us a multifaceted symbol of this transformative process.

God is Holding Your Life

~ New Year Worship Series ~
January 10 – February 7, 2021
Life is a series of exclamations from “Oh No!” to “Help!” to “Oh Yeah!” We can swing between disappointment, helplessness, and gratitude on a daily basis. There are also seasons of our lives when we feel inundated with more of one than the others.
As we enter the new year, we had hoped we would be past the “Oh No!” of the last 10 months. Instead we find ourselves with ongoing prayers for “Help!” The Book of Psalms knows all about this. Written over a span of time from exile and isolation to the rebuilding of the community, the poetry of the Psalms will accompany us in this series, reminding us that through it all, we can trust and even give our thankful “Oh Yeah!” because God is, indeed, holding our lives.
January 10: “Awe and Wonder” … Psalm 29
January 17: “These Lives are Precious” … Psalm 72
January 24: “Where Can I Go?” … Psalm 139

I Believe, Even When…

~ Advent & Christmas Worship Series ~
November 29 – December 27, 2020
The history of humanity is fraught with pain–especially the pain that comes accompanied by fear and leads to oppression and violence of one people against another. This is the world into which Jesus was born and through which his teachings would challenge and call for transformation. The opening words of an anonymous Jewish poet, “I believe in the sun, even when the sun is not shining,” were scrawled on a wall during the Holocaust. This theme song for our season calls us to examine our penchant for annihilating fear by annihilating each other. The power of narrative and music will call us to a different response– transformation and reconciliation through hope, love, joy, and peace.
This Advent and Christmas, let us fill the night with music and light and affirm and act on the reasons why we can still “believe, even when” we are discouraged.
November 29 – “I Believe in Hope”… Mark 1:1-15
December 6 – “I Believe in Love” … Matthew 1:18-25
December 13 – “I Believe in Joy” … Luke 1:46-55
December 20 – “I Believe in Peace” … John 1:1-5
Christmas Eve – “We Believe, Even Now” … Luke 2:1-20
December 27 – “Believe This: The Time has Come” … Luke 2:22-40

Summer in the Psalms

~ Worship Series August 9-23, 2020 ~
The book of Psalms possesses an enduring fascination for God’s people.
This collection of 150 poems has supplied some of our best loved passages in scripture. They simultaneously express a frankness and intimacy of emotion including love and adoration for God, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, and thankfulness for God’s care. But this diversity is unified by one element ~ they are centered upon God.

Beguiled by Beauty
Cultivating a Life of Contemplation and Compassion
~ Worship Series June 28 – August 2 ~

This 6-week series was written by the creative worship designer and leader Dr. Marcia McFee based on a book of the same name by contemporary theologian Dr. Wendy Farley. McFee writes the following about the series:
An early 6th-century theologian described God as “beguiled by beauty.” The Creator was lured by a longing for beauty and so set in motion a world of immense diversity and goodness. We were made for this Divine Goodness. We were made inherently worthy, not by our “doing,” but by our simply being. All things are beautiful–not by a standard of “pretty” as seen by our eyes, but by an essence of sacred worth that is sensed by the spirit. This is the root and heart of compassion and justice. Practices of contemplation help us train our gaze to these deeper truths. In this worship series, we will dwell with the God of divine goodness, deeply in love with us, and practice ways to return that love as we fall more deeply in love with creation and with one another.

Heart of the Matter
~ Easter-Tide Worship Series ~
In our Easter-tide series: Heart of the Matter, we create a shared “temple” of worship in our hearts that connects us across boundaries, distance, and time. At the “heart of the matter,” we are connected through the Spirit that makes us one in love.
Throughout the Easter season, worshipers are invited to light a candle and place a worry stone next to it and also consume food during the service. So, to enhance your worship experience each Sunday, please prepare the following items before the service begins.
- A candle, either wax or battery-operated
- A small stone with a heart shape, painted or drawn on it.
- Breakfast food or snack for yourself (and your family if you are with them)

Entering the Passion of Jesus
~ Worship Series for Lent ~

The events of Christ’s Passion, that take place during the last week of Jesus’ life are important to our faith journey and identity as followers of Jesus but often do not receive enough attention. Throughout the six weeks of Lent, inspired by Amy-Jill Levine’s book “Entering the Passion of Jesus,” we will “freeze-frame” moments in Holy Week, so that we might put ourselves in the picture, thereby entering the passion of Jesus.

Making Sense of the Bible
~ Worship Series ~
The Bible is the most important book for Christians. Both New and Old Testaments are filled with many fascinating stories of our ancestors of faith. God speaks through the Bible, and we find the life and teachings of Jesus in it. But this wonderful book also contains many passages that are rather perplexing, confusing, and disturbing. Inspired by Adam Hamilton’s book, Making Sense of the Bible, we will examine some of those challenging scriptures.

Unsung Heroes of Faith
~ November Worship Series ~
The Bible is filled with many people who, called by God, use their gifts to make a difference for God’s people. Like Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Peter, and Paul, they are big leaders whose names and accomplishments are well-known to us. But, there many others whose names and/or actions do get much attention.
For three Sundays in November, we will reflect on some of those unsung biblical heroes who can teach us something important about faith. During this sermon series, consider reaching out to the unsung heroes in your own faith journey with a phone call, text, note, etc., to thank them.

A Journey Through the Lord’s Prayer
~ Summer Worship Series ~
We pray this prayer every Sunday, and for many of us, it is a daily prayer. It’s “The Lord’s Prayer,” a prayer that Jesus gave us to pray.
This summer, from June 16 through July 28, we will spend 7 weeks reflecting on each phrase of this simple but profound prayer, so that we will better know for what we are praying when we pray it.
June 16: “Lord, Teach Us to Pray”
June 23: “Our Father, Who Art in Heaven”
June 30: “Thy Kingdom Come”
July 7: “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”
July 14: “And Forgive Us Our Trespasses…”
July 21: “Lead Us Not into Temptation…”
July 28: “For Thine Is the Kingdom”

More Questions than Answers … Questions Jesus Asked
~ Worship Series for Lent & Easter ~
Asking questions was central to Jesus’ life and ministry. Throughout his ministry, Jesus himself asked over 300 questions, and he answered only a few of the questions asked of him. He often asked a question to answer a question. Some of Jesus’ questions are simple and straightforward, while others are rhetorical and hard to answer. This Lent, we will reflect on some of the questions Jesus asked to better know God and grow in our relationship with God.

Lessons from the Patriarchs…
~ Worship Series for February ~
The dictionary defines a patriarch as a male head of a family or tribe, a person who is regarded as the founder of a colony or religion, and simply a man of great age and dignity. The biblical patriarchs are the family line of men God used to establish the nation of Israel, and narrowly defined, they are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s 12 sons.
This sermon series includes the first three patriarchs, and Joseph, one of the 12 sons of Jacob.
The stories of the biblical patriarchs that had been handed down by word of mouth for many generations until they were recorded in the book of Genesis are more than just biographies. Instead, they are stories of the patriarchs’ faith and trust in God. They tell us about the relationships between God and God’s chosen people. And so as we read and reflect on the stories of the 4 great patriarchs of the Bible, we will seek to learn something about God and our relationships with God as well.
February 3: Abraham… Genesis 12:1-4
February 10: Isaac … Genesis 26:17-25
February 17: Jacob … Genesis 32:22-31
February 24: Joseph … Genesis 45:1-8, 14-15

At the Corner of Happy, Healthy & Holy …
~ Worship Series ~
Join us for a new sermon series for a new year –
“At the Corner of Happy, Healthy, & Holy”
Borrowing Walgreen’s old slogan, “At the Corner of Happy and Healthy,” we want to say that Campbell United Methodist Church is at the corner of happy, healthy and holy. But, how do we define being happy, healthy, or holy? How can we live a happy, healthy, and holy life? What does the Bible say about it? How can our church promote happiness, healthiness, and holiness in the world? This new sermon series seeks to find answers for these questions.

Simple Rules for Money…
~ Stewardship Worship Series Oct 28th – Nov 11th, 2018 ~
We all need money to survive in the world, and how we use money goes all the way to the heart of our relationship with God and our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ.
John Wesley, in his sermon, “The Use of Money,” provided for Methodists some basic practices regarding the use of money, and they are still excellent Christian wisdom for us today.
Wesley’s rules for money were simple: Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.
Over the next three weeks during the stewardship campaign, we will explore Wesley’s guidance on money.

Revival…
~ Worship Series Sept 9th – Oct 14th, 2018 ~
In the society of the 1700’s, when Christians churches faced serious spiritual challenges in the midst of social and political changes, John Wesley, an Anglican priest and Oxford professor preached a faith that brought a revival of Christianity throughout England and across America, and became the founder of the Methodist movement.
Wesley’s life and message continue to speak to the Christians in the 21st Century, calling us to a revival of our hearts and minds, so that our lives can be changed, and we can transform the world.
For the next six weeks, inspired by Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book, Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It, we will review Wesley’s life and message and rediscover our spiritual passion.

Empowered…
~ A Worship Series based on the book of Acts: 20 May – 24 June 2018 ~
On the day of Pentecost, first followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit, and they were changed forever. Empowered by the Spirit, they became bold in their acts of praise, prayer, healing, teaching, and witnessing. Empowered by the Spirit, they became a new movement that spread like wildfire.
In this Pentecost season series, we will turn to the book of Acts to learn about the boldness of the early Christian church.

Witnesses of Easter
~ Worship Series for Easter and Eastertide: 1 April – 13 May 2018 ~
The New Testament witnesses were fully aware of the background against which the resurrection took place. The body of Jesus, in accordance with Jewish burial custom, was wrapped in a linen cloth. Approximately 100 pounds of aromatic spices, mixed together to form a gummy substance, were applied to the wrappings of cloth about the body. After the body was placed in a solid rock tomb, an extremely large stone was rolled against the entrance of the tomb. Large stones weighing approximately two tons were normally rolled by means of levers against a tomb entrance.
Roman guards were stationed at the tomb. They affixed on the tomb the Roman seal, which was meant to “prevent any attempt at vandalizing the sepulcher.” Anyone trying to move the stone from the tomb’s entrance would have broken the seal and thus incurred the wrath of Roman law.
But three days later the tomb was empty. The followers of Jesus said He had risen from the dead. They reported that He appeared to them during a period of 40 days, showing Himself to them by many “infallible proofs.” In this series, we will examine the stories of the Easter Witnesses.

Jesus in the Gospel of John
~ Worship Series for Lent: 18 February – 30 March 2018 ~
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are the four gospels in the Bible, and John is very different in many ways from the other three (who are called Synoptic Gospels). The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because they include many of the same stories, often in a similar sequence and in similar or sometimes identical wording. They stand in contrast to John, whose content is comparatively distinct. The Jesus whom we encounter in the unique gospel of John is not the same Jesus that Matthew, Mark, and Luke portray.
You are invited to join in worship and explore together several key themes in the gospel of John, as well as read the entire book (only 21 chapters) throughout the season of Lent. It will be a very meaningful Lenten journey.

Half Truths
~ Worship Series: 14 January – 11 February 2018 ~
There are some simple phrases that we often use to guide our lives. And they may even sound Christian – like something you might find in the Bible:
- Everything happens for a reason.
- God helps those who help themselves.
- God won’t give you more than you can handle.
- God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
- Love the sinner, hate the sin.
Though these statements all capture some element of truth, they miss the point in very important ways. They can mislead people about their understanding of God.
Join us in our new worship series from January 14 to February 11, 2018 as we examine these common phrases and we search for the whole truth, based on Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book, Half Truths.
This is a great opportunity for you to invite your friends and neighbors to worship, using the bulletin insert about the series. Inserts are available here, and also in the sanctuary narthex (entrance).
During the worship series, a small group gathering will be held after the worship service for those who want to discuss the weekly topic with others.
Just grab a cup of coffee/tea/snack in the Fellowship Hall and come to the Fireside Room.

Angels Among Us
~ Advent Worship Series ~
The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point – their favorite line being #DoNotBeAfraid. As we look at the stories of these winged messengers, we will contemplate what message we can offer that will counteract a culture of fear and bring #morehope, #morepeace, #morejoy, and #morelove and #morelife to the world.
Please join us this Advent season, beginning December 3rd.

Can You Hear Me Now?
Stories of Calling in the Old Testament
– November Sermon Series –
Paul said that all Scripture is God-breathed. Still, when did you last hear a sermon on the Old Testament? The Old Testament sets up the categories for how we see Jesus. It shows how God calls us to live in our religious, economic, and political realities.
The Old Testament can be seen as an indispensable source of knowledge about the things of God…to work deeply with the challenge found in a prophetic passage, or a narrative, expecting to find in the text itself some guidance for meeting that challenge…to discover in the instructions and prayers of the Old Testament a substantial measure of ‘the peace of God, which passeth all understanding’ (Philippians 4:7)…

Defying Gravity
– October Sermon Series –
Over a four-week period, we will examine the generous life – what it is and why it can be hard to experience. We will be studying the topic of generosity, including data from surveys, insights from experts, and conversations with generous people about their goals and habits. We want to understand why generosity brings people joy and what forces work against it. Many of us want to experience the significance of blessing others but feel trapped by past decisions and misled by a society that bombards us with messages of having more and having better. The good news is that Jesus offers us a way to “defy gravity” and break free from the culture of more.
From October 8 – 29th, come hear what the Bible and others say about how to experience a generous life. There will be exercises and challenges during this series to help you consider your relationship with money, possessions, and giving. You will not want to miss a single Sunday of “Defying Gravity.” We want to have fun with this and encourage you to share some of your activities (like before and after pictures of de-cluttering your life) and post them on our church Facebook page with the hashtag: #CampbellUMCDefyingGravity
On October 29, we will celebrate our commitments for the next year with an all-church brunch after worship.

Why?
– The September Sermon Series –
Acts 2:42 could be considered a purpose statement for the church: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Also, the church is to be about the business of ministering to those in need. This includes not only sharing the gospel, but also providing for physical needs (food, clothing, shelter) as necessary and appropriate.
So, why do we have church? Paul gave an excellent illustration to the believers in Corinth. The church is God’s hands, mouth, and feet in this world—the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). We are to be doing the things that Jesus Christ would do if He were here physically on the earth. The church is to be “Christian,” “Christ-like,” and Christ-following.

Summer in the Psalms
The book of Psalms possesses an enduring fascination for God’s people. This collection of 150 poems has supplied some of our best loved passages in scripture. They simultaneously express a frankness and intimacy of emotion including love and adoration for God, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, and thankfulness for God’s care. But this diversity is unified by one element ~ they are centered upon God.

Your Story Matters.
In this sermon series, we’ll explore not only “My Story” (an introduction to Pastor Ouk-Yean),
but also “Our Story” and “God’s Story”.
This was also the theme for the 2017 California-Nevada Annual Conference, held June 21-25.
“As you serve others, share your testimony of the love of God with them. Share with them the good news of the saving grace of Christ Jesus and invite them to church. If those you are sharing a witness with already have a church or a community of faith, then encourage them to fully participate in their church or community of faith, and you go and do the same.”

Postcards from the Edge
Of the Promised Land:
In this sermon series, we’ll immerse ourselves in the Exodus story, which comes from the Jewish part of our Judeo-Christian tradition. It’s the tradition Jesus grew up in and practiced. The story he knew. The story of his people. And it has everything in it: brokenness and redemption, promises and betrayal, the people’s long search for God in their midst. All the ways God shows up.
We’ll listen for the ways the rich stories of the Exodus—the Jews’ journey from slavery to freedom—
echo in our experiences today.
You may be surprised at how relevant these stories are.

Roll Down Justice:
Our Worship Theme for Lent
Lent is a time for reminding ourselves who we are called to be in this world.
Our worship during Lent—the 40 days before Easter–is inspired by Amos, a prophet whose message is that God calls us to let “justice roll down like waters.”
Worship without justice is not what God wants from us. Our songs, our prayers, our rituals must move us to action on behalf of the oppressed.
All through this season, powerful music and reminders of the rituals of baptism will offer paths for reflection and renewed commitment to the heart of the Gospel: God’s love for all people.
What prejudices are we challenged to “give up” as a Lent practice?
How are we willing to “give” of ourselves for the sake of the world?
Find the Lent Brochure with Worship, Lenten activities, & Holy Week info here.

This Is Who We Are:
Conversions and Convictions
The Church’s Mission is clear, and it is given to us by our tradition: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. But what does that mean—for us, here, now? Do all of the activities and programs of the church align with and support that mission?
What does a disciple look like, in Campbell, California, in 2017? How do you “make” disciples? What part of the world are we trying to transform, and what kind of “transformation” are we talking about?

Advent: Even Now…
something waits to be born.
A Sermon Series for Advent 2016
The season of Advent – the four weeks before Christmas – is as ancient as Christianity itself. Int the Church, the season of Christmas begins on Christmas Day. Until then, we are in a season of waiting and watching, preparing ourselves for the birth of God into the world of human life. Until the Christ Child is born, in a blaze of stars and light, we wait in darkness.

Freedom: 12-Step Spirituality
for Everyone Who Struggles
Sermon Series – June through August 2016
Have you ever visited an AA or Al-Anon meeting? You might be amazed at the depth of personal connection evident among the people there, and their openness with one another.
I think this is what church should feel like.
At least part of the reason church doesn’t feel like this is that our worship services often do not require or invite the deep vulnerability that leads to that kind of connection & transformation. Have we lost the sense that the need for forgiveness, healing, and wholeness is our common experience?
The “Twelve Steps” are a path to knowing God. Not the path, and not a path that will work for everyone. But they are a path—one that might lead to freedom, (even for people who do not think of themselves as addicted). This sermon series is an exploration of that path.
Each week’s sermon will track a step or two. And I think you will see the remarkable way in which the Twelve Steps mirror the teachings of Jesus.
Join us for a summer of honesty and growth. – Rev. Kathi McShane

This I Believe…
What do we believe? What does it mean to believe something as ‘an article of faith’? In this Sermon Series, we will look at a historic creed of the Christian Church (The Apostles’ Creed), as well as some contemporary affirmations of faith. This series will culminate with the congregation’s personal statements of faith, to be shared on Pentecost Sunday (May 15).

“Into-Me-See”: Knowing & Being Known
– Lent 2016
There are many forms of intimacy. In its truest sense, intimacy is a closeness between persons that comes with familiarity, understanding and acceptance. My favorite re-phrasing of the word intimacy is “into-me-see”. To be in relationship with Jesus is to be in relationship with other people. That relationship necessarily involves listening, asking questions that invite the other into connection, and self-disclosure that is mutual, respectful, and safe.
The practice of intimacy—exercising the heart and using the skills required to create open, authentic and loving relationships—is the spiritual discipline on which we will focus this Lent.
