Dear Campbell UMC Family & Friends –<\/span><\/p>\n

This week, we are blessed to have messages from all three of our Pastors!<\/p>\n

Message from Pastor Alyss:<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.
\nThat has been a familiar mantra to all of us since our church joined the LGBTQ+ Reconciling Movement some 29 years ago. I hope that each of you will join me in words of thanks and great gratitude for those courageous individuals who shepherded us through that time. At the same time, may we extend our deepest expressions of thanks to all those in the Reconciling Ministries Network who supported us and so many other churches then and now. And finally, let us take a moment to hold close to our hearts all those elders, deacons, lay leaders, and laity who since 1972 have stood unwaveringly and sacrificed so much to keep God\u2019s table open to all, including our LGBTQ+ siblings.<\/p>\n

I can so clearly remember the first General Conference that I attended. It was in 2016, the conference was being held in Portland, Oregon, and I was in my first year of seminary. I was the proverbial \u201cbabe in the woods,\u201d and while I knew that the Methodist Church was in the midst of a fight over the inclusion of LGBTQ+ folxs, I had no idea to what degree. I sat on the sidelines, watching and listening, moving from moments of horror, confusion, sadness, frustration, anger, and back again. It was not unlike watching two people whom you love viciously fight, and feeling powerless, scared, and confused; wanting it all to just end. And I might guess that I wasn\u2019t alone in feeling all of that.<\/p>\n

At lunchtime on the second day, I was invited to join a group of maybe 100 others that formed a gauntlet leading to the conference center entry doors. We were each given a stole<\/a> to hold from a clergy person who had been defrocked for being LGBTQ+, performing a same sex marriage, or a similar action. I stood there in silence, holding that stole, thinking about the soul whose stole I held, and wept as I watched delegates walk through that gauntlet; many looking down to avoid seeing those stoles and tears. Emotions ran so deep that, ultimately, that General Conference ended with no resolution. The battle had ended, and the stench blanketed our Savior, who asks us to love our neighbor.<\/p>\n

A Special General Conference was held in February of 2019, and I was there once again, hoping and praying that this time, this time would be different than 2016 and all those since 1972, when, for the first time, language was added saying that the church does not condone the practice of homosexuality, viewing it as “incompatible with Christian teaching,” and opposing same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, my prayers would not be answered during that time in St. Louis, and I began to seriously consider my calling and my denominational affiliation. On the final night, I walked down the street with many of my old seminarian friends, stunned and dejected beyond belief.<\/p>\n

I pray everyone is doing okay.<\/p>\n

The Courage to Make Room<\/u><\/span>
\nThere is a difference between having<\/em> room and making<\/em> room.
\nHaving room can be accidental. There happens to be an empty chair, an opening in the conversation, or space at the table. Making room, however, is intentional.
\nIt requires us to notice who is present, who is missing, who has been welcomed, and who may still be wondering whether there is a place for them.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this is part of the work of discipleship: learning to make room<\/u>.
\n– Making room for another person’s story.
\n– Making room for experiences different from our own.
\n– Making room for questions we have not considered.
\n– Making room for people who have too often been pushed to the margins.
\nSometimes, making room requires the courage to examine the spaces we have created and ask whether the welcome we proclaim is also a welcome people can experience.<\/p>\n

Healing the World<\/u><\/span>
\nThis Sunday<\/a>, Campbell UMC will celebrate Pride Sunday, and Rev. Alyss Swanson will preach a message titled \u201cHealing the World,\u201d<\/em> drawing from Leviticus 19:33\u201334 & Isaiah 58:12. These scripture lessons offer timely & relevant images of the community God calls us to become. Leviticus calls God’s people to love the stranger as themselves. Isaiah speaks of those who will become repairers of the breach & restorers of streets to live in.<\/em><\/p>\n

What if healing the world begins, at least in part, by creating communities where fewer people have to wonder whether there is room for them?
\nOn Pride Sunday, we celebrate our LGBTQ+ siblings and affirm what we seek to embody throughout the year:

Sometimes I function on automatic pilot \u2013 just doing \u2013 not paying attention \u2013 not noticing when I am tired, angry, anxious, happy, sad, or lonely. I start acting in judgmental ways \u2013 working on the heart of someone else.
